ROADWAY - AND BRIDGE - RELATED EXPERIENCE

LOOP 202 FREEWAY

Southlands is currently part of the Loop 202 Freeway Project team that includes providing geotechnical engineering and drilling services for approximately 23 miles of a new freeway on the west side of Phoenix. The project is the largest public roadway project ever awarded in the state of Arizona. Southlands is the lead drilling firm on the project and has been allocated more boreholes than the other four drilling subcontractors on the project.

Tangerine Road

The project consisted of drilling over sixty boreholes for the geotechnical subsurface investigation for the expansion project for Tangerine Road from Thornydale to Interstate 10. Our crews are well-trained to handle the technical and safety aspect of roadway projects, especially when the existing roadway is active during the investigation process.

Tucson Market Place

Performed geotechnical and environmental drilling investigation for part of the Tucson Market Place in Tucson, Arizona. This premier commercial property is one of Tucson’s latest retail developments. Southlands drilled and sampled numerous vertical boreholes for soil sampling which included various soil testing and consistent equipment and tooling decontamination.

Bureau of Indian Affairs, Chinle, Arizona:

Southlands recently completed a very challenging project on behalf of the BIA in northern Arizona. The project consisted of drilling during winter conditions and also required off-road and 4-wheel drive equipment to access the sites in the remote environment. Geotechnical boreholes were drilled for the proposed roadway and two bridge structures that will provide all-weather access to a new school.

University of Arizona Tech Park, Kolb Road

Southlands has worked on numerous projects north of the Kolb and Valencia at the Tech Park. The projects have ranged from the new roadway, roadway improvements, and expansion to commercial buildings and structures.

Kolb and Valencia Intersection

Southlands provided geotechnical drilling and testing services for the proposed improvements and realignment of the intersection of Kolb and Valencia. Most of the work was completed by utilizing a combination of excavation methods and field soil testing equipment.

PROJECTS: ENVIRONMENTAL - RELATED EXPERIENCE

2023

BP Zambia: Sabena and Musenga Sites

Southlands conducted project oversight and CQA services on behalf of BP Remediation Group for two sites contaminated by acid tars that had been produced from a BP blending plant near Kitwe, Zambia.

Southlands worked AMEC (Denver) and Teichmann (South Africa) to remediate 345,000 cubic yards at Musenga and 287,000 cubic yards at Sabena. Remediation included the design and construction of the containment cells and neutralization of the material prior to placement in the cells. The cells were capped and revegetated to complete the project.

Angle drilling for environmental investigation to assess contamination beneath fuel tanks at a service station. The project also included several shallow and deep vertical boreholes that included sampling at specified intervals, decontamination of equipment and tools, and design backfill.

The project consisted of drilling several boreholes for environmental sampling, testing, and assessment. Multiple samples were collected at various intervals. Southlands also coordinated and removed an existing UST, including all existing underground metal plumbing that had remained on site. We were also responsible for the transportation and disposal of the removed material at a local recycling facility including obtaining disposal certificates.
